Senatus Allocutio : February 2022 by Rev. Fr Adrian Yeo Senatus Spiritual Director

TOPIC : Preparing for Lent

Soon it will be Lent. Lent begins on 2nd of March. It is a great opportunity for all of us to think about what we are called to do. We can start thinking and reflecting about it now we need not wait until Ash Wednesday and then decide. Time passes us fast hence it’s important that we start preparing ourselves for the upcoming Lent. Perhaps now is a good time to start reflecting and to prepare ourselves. This is time of personal reflection and it also a personal journey. We must also realize that Lent is not the time for us to whip ourselves. It’s not the time that God wants us to suffer. Yes, we do penance, and we must realize why we are doing penance. We are doing it all because of the great event. Easter is the greatest event of the liturgical calendar. The passion, death and resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. During Easter we are celebrating our redemption. We are saved by God’s love and God has given us new life.

So we need to start thinking about what we are going to do to prepare ourselves for so that we can die to ourselves. The whole season of lent is really a season of dying to oneself and more importantly not just dying to oneself but to rise again with Christ on Easter. We are made new. That’s the reason why we have Baptism during Easter. The main emphasis of Lent is dying to oneself so that we can rise again with Christ. This is an important reminder of this season. We need to die to our sinfulness; this is how we can prepare ourselves. We need to figure out what we need to do and don’t be too ambitious. Sometimes it is the little thing that we should work on for example to control our temper and don’t get angry so easily or to snap at people. These are the little things that we can do. It is these little things that we do daily that we die to self, and we rise with God. Let’s prepare ourselves well during this Lent by dying to ourselves
